The sphinx is a large, winged creature with a lion's body. Their heads, however, are like those of other creatures -- for instance, the andro- and gynosphinxes have Human heads, the criosphinx has the head of a ram, and the hieracosphinx that of a hawk. Sphinxes are solitary creatures fond of warm, dry climates, but may be encountered anywhere.
Note: The sphinx originally appeared in this form in the D&D Rules Cyclopedia for the D&D game from TSR, with additional information from the 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual. Its use here is for the purposes of providing context for the campaign only.
