After Alysten and her compatriots had dispensed with the last of their obligations to the Allied Temples, they still needed to wait for Corelda and her companions to return from Jar-Kahn. George went to Hanmer in order to contact Koku, while the rest of the group decided to seek out some employment to increase their funds.

Making inquiries

Frank Brandybuck went to the Investigators' Guild of Nazivonema, of which he was a member, where he learned that Terylla, a member of the Council of Merchants, had requested aid to recover her lost brooch. Meanwhile, in the Red Dragon Inn, the party was approached by Tox, a mysterious proxy of Nevis who hid his face. He sought their aid with a mission to track down and destroy a powerful undead creature. The party decided to split their forces between the two missions.

Before the split

The party went to Terylla's house, where they were met by her butler, Murch. He explained to them that he had been paying his employer's dues to the Thieves' Guild regularly for the past eight years through a contact named Leveldor. The brooch had been a gift from Terylla's late husband. Recently, a local antique dealer named Koroz had been making inquiries about purchasing the brooch.

Alysten, Sevreen, Gabriella and Molbo went to the Serrian School of Wild Magic, where Alysten was training, to research the item and to have Molbo's magical axe identified. While Alysten checked on information with a local necromancer, Sevreen and Gillek went to try and make contact with Koroz by offering information regarding the Rod of Zathmore.

Upon returning to the Red Dragon Inn, they were met by an old friend, Shimwell Maranthis, who arrived in the company of an Elven ranger, Josiah Gentleseed, whom Gillek recruited to help. The group accompanying Tox departed at this time, promising to be back within a couple days.

After the split

The wrong man

As the party waited to hear from Koroz, Josiah decided to attempt to track the other group, who was overdue. The group focused on a second suspect, another member of the Council named Numbithree. After discovering new construction in the back of his townhouse, NightShade arranged with the Thieves' Guild of Nazivonema to allow the group to break into the building the following night. Also, a message arrived from Koroz to accept a meeting the same day.

Sevreen and Gillek went to the meeting, with NightShade and Tolmyr standing lookout outside the house. Koroz offered the group 500 gold, but when the party refused, he called on several guards to attack the group. The four wound up killing everyone, although Sevreen was severely injured. They fled to a safe house, where Gillek gave her a potion of healing.

Meanwhile, Josiah returned, telling the group he had tracked them to a cabin, but could not find them or pick up any trail from there. Tolmyr returned to the RDI and told him and Frank what happened. Frank went to the house and found that the authorities were already arrived. He went to report to his boss, a druid named Wiggins, to decide what he should do from here. Wiggins said he would postpone the search of Koroz' house until the next day. However, it turned out that the man killed by the party was actually Numbithree posing as Koroz, and that the real Koroz had gone to Kimelis on business. Shimwell and Josiah headed off to Kimelis to find him.

Clues

Frank and Tolmyr then went to Numbithree's residence to search for clues. Frank discovered a document with several names on it, but not that of Koroz. Zin Findel arrived to let the party know the status of Alysten's group, while Frank told her what had happened here in Nazh.

Back at Koroz's house, Frank discovered a letter engraved with a symbol belonging to Mozenrath, the same wizard that Tox and the others had gone to the Land of the Black Sand to investigate. It told Koroz to go to the same cabin to which Josiah had tracked the others. Frank then visited some new construction that he had previously noted, and found that it was guarded by mamluks.

Revelation

He went back that night with Zin and Tarney and destroyed them with some acid, but discovered a brazier, which they were unable to take. Upon returning with city guards, they went through a hole in the floor created by the acid and found another mamluk, which Tolmyr killed. At this point, Wiggins arrived and let Frank know that Messoch, the mayor and titular head of the Council, would be notified of Koroz's dealings. The brazier was discovered to contain Black Sand, and a cask of it was also discovered in the basement.

Aftermath

That night, Sevreen departed for Sigil to research Mozenrath. The next morning, the group received a message that the Council would meet to discuss the evidence against Koroz. The group returned with Terylla to the meeting, but the Council refused to take direct action. Terylla gave the group a partial reward of fifty pieces of platinum, and resolved to continue searching for the medallion another way.
