Fern Arable is the 12-year-old, human daughter of John and Nancy Arable. She lives with her elder brother, Avery on their farm in Promise Junction. She spends a great deal of time with her best friend who works on their farm, Lenin, to her parents' dismay. They feel he is a bad influence, being two years older than her. They feel he is putting her at risk by teaching her about the ways of nature so she can best use her ability to talk to animals. She is at constant odds with her parents because they keep trying to downplay this ability to protect her.
