Fern Arable

Fern Arable is the 12-year-old Human daughter of John and Nancy Arable. She lives with her elder brother, Avery, on their farm in Promise Junction. She spends a great deal of time with her best friend who works on their farm, Lenin, to her parents' dismay. They feel he is a bad influence, being two years older than her. They feel he is putting her at risk by teaching her about the ways of nature so she can best use her ability to talk to animals. Her parents have forbidden her to use this ability beyond the farmyard because they are concerned that someone will take advantage of her if they see the acorn mark on her throat and see her talking to animals. This hasn't stopped her, however, which has now raised a few questions by those in authority.
