Charon
From Ardrana
The River Styx links the topmost layers of the Lower Planes, and its branches can be found anywhere from the Nine Hells to the Abyss. The safest passage across the Styx is by the skiff of Charon, boatman of the Lower Planes.
Charon may be summoned only on the banks of the Styx. He will appear with a large black skiff that holds as many as are present. He is aided by servants known as marraenoloths, who appear in his stead in branches of the Styx. Neither Charon nor his servants will transport any beings that do not pay the required price
Charon appears as a skeletal man with a haggard face and glowing eyes. He is normally dressed in royal robes or ermine and silk, which hide his form until he either looks at a person or extends his hand for payment.
Note: Charon originally appeared in this form in the 1st Edition Monster Manual II for the AD&D game from TSR. His use here is for the purposes of providing context for the campaign only.
