Onyx Road Network

The Onyx Road Network is a system of paved roads built by the Onyx Empire before and during the Wars of Arin. The system was the brainchild of Morjec, the right-hand man of Keraptis, who was well known for his drive to build physical manifestations of the power of the empire.

Construction of the roads began during the reign of Lloyd VI. They were mostly built in Arin, but a few were also constructed in what was then Garnath, and even extended into Alior, Tanilon, and even Tyllan. They were designated with numbers rather than names -- the lower the number, the earlier the road had been built. Onyx Road 1 linked Arek -- then the capital -- to the city of Floyk to the northeast.

These roads served primarily as trade routes at first, but during the wars eventually they became the primary means to move troops and supplies around the empire. As the fighting turned against the empire, many of the roads were destroyed by White Alliance forces, while a few were destroyed by retreating Onyx Army troops. Sections of the original roads do exist in some spots, while others are being rebuilt, especially by the Dwarves of Thorin's clan in the northern foothills of the Thair Mountains. Most, however, have simply been abandoned.
