The Middlefields

The Middlefields is a term used to refer to an area in northwestern Kellan. Before the Wars of Arin, it typically referred to everything south of Semmarch and north of Hanmer, and between Faxanadu and the Filitir Forest, with no set boundaries. Today, it is more often understood to be the area bounded by the four main trade routes that run through the region: the Old Gnome Road, the East-West Road, the King's Road, and Harper's Trail. However, some still use the old definition, including parts of Idrellan, Hanaellan and even Lan-Zarek as part of the region.

The area is mostly composed of plains that have been converted into farmlands. It is criss-crossed by many dirt paths that lead between the trade routes, the farms, and the many villages both large and small that are scattered through the land. There are also a fair number of fortresses and small castles, most of which were built during the Wars of Arin. Many of these have since been abandoned and fallen into disrepair, while some few have been turned into temples of Sedric, Raskill or Gaiya.

Although the area is generally peaceful, there has been some stirrings in the northern Middlefields since the separation of neighboring Hanaellan from the White Alliance. Duchess Lanthana of Kellan has promised not to allow the incursions of evil humanoids that have recently plagued the areas to the north, but there are some who mistrust her and the White Army in general, leading to some heightening of tensions in the area.
